How it works

A note on privacy

The original PDF is processed in your browser and is not uploaded as a file. To generate the summary, the extracted text is sent to PDFly's server, which forwards it to Google Gemini. PDFly does not store this text beyond what's needed to complete the request; see the Privacy page for the current data-handling policy.

This is worth knowing for business documents and legal papers. If you're working with something highly sensitive that shouldn't leave your device at all, that's worth weighing before using this tool specifically.

Limitations

  • The extracted document text is capped at 40,000 characters (roughly 10,000 tokens). Longer documents are truncated to this limit before the summary is generated.
  • The summary is generated from the document text only — it won't reflect anything beyond that character limit.

Troubleshooting

  • "No selectable text found in this PDF": This means the PDF is a scan or image-based document with no text layer. Run OCR PDF first, then summarize the result.
  • "Could not read this PDF": The file may be corrupted or password-protected. Try Unlock PDF or Repair PDF first.
  • "Something went wrong. Please try again": The AI service may be briefly busy, or the shared daily AI capacity may have been reached for the day. Wait a moment and retry.
  • The summary seems to skip parts of a long document: Text past the 40,000-character mark is truncated before summarizing — for very long documents, split it first with Split PDF and summarize each part.
